Freshman Sydnei McCaskill

Still perfect
1/11/2010

Dr. Phillips Women’s Basketball traveled down to Pompano Beach Ely last year and got a taste of what it takes to compete at an elite level when they were hammered 60-29.  Saturday at this year’s MLK Classic, DP (19-0) got a chance to return the favor as they used a 17-6 third quarter run in a 48-37 victory over the Tigers (16-3).  The Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead early and led after one, 12-5, behind a pair of three-pointers by Sydnei McCaskill.  In the second quarter, Ely was able to get the ball inside to their 6-4 center (Maryland commit) and shaved the deficit to 22-18 at the half.  DP blew the doors open in the third quarter when McCaskill buried a pair of threes and raced to a 39-24 lead.  The lead expanded to 17 in the fourth quarter before DP called off the dogs and went into a conservative offense.  Ely went a small run but couldn’t overcome the earlier barrage as the Panthers tied the program record for consecutive wins during a season with 19.  McCaskill finished with 14 points, Alexis Brown chipped in 12 while Hannah Schaible added eight points, a team-high 12 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.  They will be back in action Friday night as they host South Lake.  With a win, the Panthers will wrap up the top seed for the upcoming District Tournament.  They have already sealed the Metro West Conference Championship, their first Metro title in  18 years and the 115th overall Metro title in the school’s 23-year history.
