National Signing Day recap
2/3/2010

Dr. Phillips High School was proud to have five student-athletes sign their names to athletic scholarships this morning on National Signing Day.  Women's Soccer standout Alexis Garrand and Football stars Kenny Shaw, Marvin Ford, Marquis Hood and Charles Favors all took part in the ceremony in front of hundreds of students, parents and media.

Alexis Garrand signed with the University of West Florida, having played a tremendous leadership role in the Panthers' remarkable turnaround this season.  She set a school record with five goals in one game and notched 22 goals to lead the team.  Garrand was also named first team All-Metro Conference and has been a varsity letterman for four years.

Wide receiver Kenny Shaw signed to play for Florida State University.  While he was offered scholarships by virtually every major Division I program in the nation, Shaw kept true to his dream of playing for the Seminoles.  He leaves DP as the school record holder in five statistical categories:  most receptions in a season (64), receptions in a career (122), receiving yards in a season (914), touchdown catches in a season (9) and 100-yard receiving games in a season (5).  Shaw was named to the first team All-Metro Conference, All-Orange County and All-Central Florida.

Marvin Ford is one of three Panthers to sign with Colorado State University.  Ford was Mr. Versatility for DP this year as he rushed for over 600 yards, scored nine touchdowns (a team-high 80 yarder vs. West Orange) and was oustanding as both a defensive back and defensive end when called to duty.

Joinng Ford at Colorado State is linebacker Marquis Hood, another All-Orange County selection from DP.  Hood finished second on the team with 103 tackles as well as three forced fumbles and two recoveries.  While others may have garnered more attention, Hood was the quiet leader on defense for DP...always in the right spot and a playmaker all season long.

Linebacker Charles Favors also signed with Colorado State after setting school records in career tackles (374), tackles in a season (151) and tackles in a game (22).  In every game, Charles Favors was a force.  This year he led the team with 132 tackles, three forced fumbles and seven tackles for loss.  Favors was named to the first team All-Metro Conference, All-Orange County and All-Central Florida.
