In what could easily go down as one of the most extraordinary comebacks in school history, Dr. Phillips Women’s Basketball rallied back from a 17-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat East Ridge in overtime, 58-56, in the District Semifinals last night. The Panthers came out sluggish and shots wouldn’t fall as East Ridge built a 20-9 lead at the half. Things looked worse in the third quarter as the Knights were unstoppable, both inside and beyond the arc, as the lead swelled to 17. DP clawed its way back in, slicing the deficit to just eight, 32-24, with two minutes left in the period but East Ridge answered right back with a 6-0 run to end the third quarter with a 14-point lead. But DP (27-0) never panicked. Down by 17 in the fourth quarter, 43-26, Sydnei McCaskill and Lexi Brown began to heat up, each nailing critical threes, but DP still trailed, 45-33, with 4:02 remaining. Things started to tilt in DP’s favor from that point on. Hannah Schaible’s layup off a steal, two more threes from Brown and McCaskill and tremendous rebounding inside from Schaible and Brittany Marshall kept the Panthers’ hopes alive. Lexi Brown’s runner in the lane cut the margin to 49-44 with 1:20 left and you could literally feel the inevitable about to happen. With under ten seconds remaining, DP tied the game at 51-51 with a free throw to send it into overtime. In the overtime period, both teams exchanged a pair of baskets but with just six seconds left in the game, senior Brittany Marshall sank the front end of a one-and-one, her second clutch free throw basket in the game’s final 15 seconds, to seal the victory, 58-56. Lexi Brown led the Panthers with 22 points as the Panthers advance to the District Championship tonight vs. Apopka at 7:00. More importantly, they qualify for the Regional Tournament next Thursday at 7:00, site and opponent to be determined.
