Lexi Brown poured in a career-high 32 points as Women's Basketball rolled to a 69-48 victory over host St. Petersburg to capture the Region 2 Championship and send Dr. Phillips (30-1) to the State Final Four for the first time since 1992. DP used a swarming pressure defense to disrupt the Green Devils' backcourt play and the strategy was effective from the start. The Panthers built a 14-3 lead in the first quarter but St. Pete wouldn't quit that easily. After a 7-0 Devils' run, a layup and subsequent three by Brown pushed the Panther lead to 19-10 and they never looked back.
A 14-2 run to open the second quarter led to a 37-19 lead at the half and the lead swelled to as many as 24 midway through the fourth quarter. DP took no chances and continued to apply the pressure until about two minutes remaining and the celebration began. The Panthers will now face South Florida powerhouse Miami Lourdes Friday in Lakeland at 8:30 PM.
