At the State Wrestling Tournament, Dr. Phillips finished 12th overall in the 82-team field and saw two juniors place in the top four. Zach Whitmire picked up victories over Brandon’s Terry Dawson (forfeit) and Southwest Miami’s Jorge Pau (pin 3:13) before falling to eventual state champion Earl Hall of South Dade in the semifinals. In the wrestlebacks, Whitmire scored a major decision over Osceola’s Efrain Jimenez (17-6) and finished in fourth place after falling to Miami Columbus’ Mark Gulesian, 10-1, in his final match. At 125 pounds, junior Janz Lado took out Parkland Douglas’ Marcos Gomes (4-3) but fell to Brandon’s eventual state champion Kevin Norstrem, 9-0, in the second round. Unfazed, Lado climbed back into contention in the wrestlebacks with victories over South Broward’s Kester Mark (3-2), Seminole Ridge’s Brandon Short (12-3) and Osceola’s Jeremy Strickland (3-1) to set up a third place final match with Miami Columbus; Matthew Noffo. Lado wrestled hard but came up just short, 3-2, to claim fourth place. Senior PJ Fronsdahl and junior Casey Sanstrom each finished the tournament with a 1-2 record. Congratulations to coach Lenin Vazquez and the team on an exceptional season!
